Five Massive Harbour Cranes Require Extra Radar So Ship Can Navigate EUROPE – EGYPT – Hamburg based heavy freight transport specialist Hansa Heavy Lift has transported five Terex(R)Gottwald mobile harbour cranes, weighing a total of 1,400 metric tonnes from Denmark and Belgium to Bulgaria and Egypt. Hansa, which specialise in heavy lift, super heavy lift, and project cargo shipments, had to lift and stow all five cranes on deck, which limited the line of sight for the crew aboard the chosen vessel, the HHL Rio de Janeiro, requiring an extra radar scanner to be installed on the foremast. The crew and loaders also had to deal with very tight load tolerances, which in places was only 20 to 30 centimetres.
Extra risk assessments were also carried out prior to commencing the voyage to fully comply with all local and flag regulations and Ian Broad, Director Marine Operations at Hansa, said:
“Thanks to our in-house team of naval architects and engineers, we were able to develop a quick, on-the-spot solution for this very challenging project. Our crews had to adjust the stowage and lashing plans for each crane in order to ensure we could accommodate all five of them on deck.” In addition to the five cranes carried on deck, the voyage included the transportation of four grabs, two bromma container spreaders and a dismantled Demag mobile crane, which were shipped under deck.
The cranes were loaded at the ports of Nyborg, Frederikshavn and Aalborg in Denmark, as well as the port of Antwerp in Belgium and then delivered to Bourgas and Varna in Bulgaria, as well as El Dekheila and Damietta in Egypt.
