Terrorist threat forces 80000 to flee German music festival

A terrorist threat rocked a music festival in Germany Friday, causing more than 80,000 concert guests to evacuate an arena. The Rock am Ring festival in Nuerburg had just begun when police advised attendees to flee immediately “due to a terrorist threat,” concert organizers said in a Facebook post.

”Due to a terrorist threat the police have advised us to interrupt the festival. We ask all festival visitors to leave the festival site in a calm and controlled manner towards the exits and camping grounds,” organizers said.

Daniel Schroder, a festival attendee, said its organizers spent two hours consulting with police before deciding to instruct fans to leave.

They were unhurried, and even sang in unison as they casually filed out of the Nuernburgring stadium.

”Defiant spirits among Rock am Ring visitors, cheated out of a day of festival, maybe the complete festival,” Rick Fulker, a concert goer, tweeted.

Police officers had already turned up in numbers.

Nearly 12,000 officers were on duty, and backpacks had been banned from the event.

Extra security precautions had been put in place in the wake of the bombing at an Ariana Grande concert[3] in Manchester, England.

Within an hour, the site was completely clear.

Schroder described it as “spooky empty” on Twitter.

The festival is scheduled over three days and will feature performances by Machine Gun Kelly, System of a Down, Macklemore, and Liam Gallagher, among others.

Police have not released specifics about the threat. “We cannot give exact background information at this time,” police said in a statement.

The festival is scheduled to resume Saturday.

Germany has had its dealings with terrorist attacks in the past year.

Around Christmastime, a Tunisian national killed a dozen people[4] when he drove a hijacked cargo truck into a packed holiday market in Berlin.

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.
