Volvo designing self-driving rubbish truck

Home[1] / News[2] / Volvo designing self-driving rubbish truck

Self-driving trucks could be used to collect household rubbish under plans being developed in Sweden.

Volvo Group and Renova are working on a truck that follows the bin man along the street as he goes from one house to the next, meaning he doesn’t need to constantly hop in and out or have a separate driver.

Lars Stenqvist, Volvo’s chief technology officer, said: ‘It follows when he is collecting garbage bins – like as if it was his dog.’

Research is ongoing and there have not yet been discussions with local authorities or contractors about commercialisation.

But Volvo Group hopes it will be part of a huge shift towards automated and electric equipment in cities across Europe.

It is also developing electric buses due to come into operation in Harrogate next year, and an electric excavator it hopes can reduce noise and emissions on building sites.
