A road rule quiz on when drivers are required to give way to buses has surprised drivers.

Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads posted an image of a car and a bus to Facebook on Monday asking people which vehicle was required to give way.

‘The bus is indicating to change lane.

The orange car is travelling beside the bus in the middle lane,’ the department wrote.

‘Who must give way?

The bus or the orange car?’

Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads posted an image of a car and a bus (pictured) and asked people which of the two vehicles was required to give way

The question divided drivers until the department explained the bus has to give way to the car.

‘When changing lanes, you have to give way to any vehicle in the lane you are moving into,’ the explanation said.

‘This rule also applies to buses, unless the bus is entering traffic from a bus stop or the side of the road.’

But some commenters blasted bus drivers who they felt regularly ignored the law.

‘If this scenario was in real life the bus would change lanes and indicate simultaneously giving the car no other option but to slam on the brakes so the bus driver could do as they pleased,’ one person wrote.

Another comment read: ‘The bus should give way but probably won’t and if it does it will tailgate the car all the way up the street until it changes lanes.’

‘From my experiences with this, the ride drivers will just try and muscle there way in anyway,’ someone added.

In Queensland, failure to give way can result in a £2,669 fine while drivers in NSW can cop a £337 fine if they fail to give way to a bus.
