Zimbabwe’s Chiwenga laments high road accidents

Accident

Acting Zimbabwean President Constantino Chiwenga on Monday bemoaned the continuous loss of lives in the country through road accidents. His comment came in the wake of the latest road accident in the eastern border town of Mutare on Saturday which claimed 16 lives. The accident occurred along the Harare-Mutare highway when a long-distance bus collided head on with a haulage truck, killing 14 people on the spot while two others died on admission to the hospital.

Forty other passengers were injured. "Life is very precious and losing it in circumstances that are avoidable is not only extremely painful and heartbreaking but also needless and senseless. "This latest bus accident brings to the fore government's call to road-users including all those involved with public transportation to value life always, and to be mindful of the heavy responsibilities they carry on their shoulders to ensure the safety of passengers," Chiwenga said.

He said government will, as usual, offer support to the bereaved families. Fatal road accidents regularly happen in Zimbabwe mostly due to speeding, error of judgment and poor state of some of the roads. At least 138 people died in road accidents during the 2019/2020 festive period from Dec.
