Road closures announced due to demolition of Northminster car park in Peterborough city centre

Firstly, the road on Northminster will be closed for a period of up to three weeks from Monday, March 23 to allow for the section of the multi-storey nearest to the road to be taken down. During this time, access to Brook Street will be maintained. The Northminster car park Copyright: JPI Media Ltd Resell

Following that, Cattle Market Way will be closed from 6pm on Saturday, April 18 to 6am on Monday, April 20.

During this time access to the residential car park for the flats will be from City Road. Redirection signage will be in effect during the closure for pedestrians and motorists. Cllr Peter Hiller, cabinet member for strategic planning, commercial strategy and investments for Peterborough City Council, said: “The demolition of the car park is progressing well and we have now reached a stage where it is necessary to close the roads around it for a short period of time to be able to deconstruct the car park safely.

“We will ensure that these road closures are lifted as quickly as possible to reduce the impact but of course alternative routes will be available and signposted.” The demolition of the car park is due to be completed in the summer. Last month the council announced that plans to regenerate the Northminster site, which includes the space occupied by the car park, have taken a step forward with the decision to transfer the land to the Peterborough Investment Partnership (PIP).

The PIP will be responsible for drawing up a detailed scheme and securing outline planning consent as this will be key to attracting external development and securing the regeneration of Northminster.

Initial work has already been undertaken by local architects to assess the site’s potential.

It is anticipated the site could include apartments, a replacement car park and a new market hall.
