Nakuru: Transport paralysed as mother nature swallows section of road

– Heavy rains and flash floods have paralysed transport along John Momany Road in Nakuru county

– A section of the usually busy road sunk and left a vehicle hanging on the road following the downpour

– The county’s administration proceeded to closed down the road pending further investigation into what could have caused the road to sink

Transport along John Momanyi Road in Nakuru county has been paralysed after a section of the road collapsed and sunk following heavy rains and floods in the region.

In a viral video on social media, a vehicle that was using the road when the incident happened was left dangerously hanging after its front wheels sunk into a hole on the road.

Nakuru county administration asked motorists to avoid using the road as they launched investigation into the rare phenomenon.

The region is synonymous for its physical features mostly emanating from volcanic activities such as the Menengai crater among others.

Some of the locals, however, blamed the incident on poor road structure citing the speed with which the road was constructed.

“Why are you calling a spade a big spoon? Engineering of this important infrastructure ignored all possible case study plus they used material that’s not fit.

Why? An aunt to someone and a cousin were on the tendering panel,” said one of the netizens.

In related incident, in Bomet county, a swamp was swallowed into an underground hole following heavy rains in the region.

In a viral video on social media, the grass was seen moving in swirls before finally getting into the hole whose depth was not known, a phenomenon which was likened to that of the famous black hole.

Several parts of the country had been affected by the heavy rains and flash floods that had claimed over 116 lives as of May 3.

Just recently, over three police officers lost their lives after their truck was swept away by water in Baringo county.

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa confirmed 29 counties had adversely been affected by floods even as the weatherman warned the situation could get worse.
